Scheduling & Routing in Finished Vehicle Logistics

Abstract: 

"Finished Vehicle Logistics" denotes a part of general transport logistics that is gaining growing importance especially in the automotive industry and offers hugh potential for optimization. As soon as a vehicle has been produced in an assembly plant, it needs to be shipped to the dealer that has ordered the vehicle for a customer. And that dealer may be located at the other end of the world. For the shippment the OEM will use an intermodal transport network of trucks, trains and vessels. Furthermore the network contains so called compounds that can be used to store or transship vehicles. The challenge on logistics is to plan routes for each vehicle (globally) in that network, that allow to deliver the vehicles to their dealers in time by minimizing the total logistics costs.

This task can be divided into several optimization problems, which focus mainly on the routing in the network and the scheduling within the compounds. In cooperation with the company INFORM we try to solve that problems in a research project.
